What you guys think about adding to your baby’s wardrobe a little knitted diaper cover? The truth is that my kids are too old to wear diaper covers, but I could not resist to knit this adorable baby piece to show you how easy is to make it. Since it is knitted with very thick wool, it is an ideal project for impatient people like me, who like to see quick results. You will have it ready to wear just in a few hours!. Those who follow me on Instragram have already seen some work in progress of this project 😊

  Cast on
Garter stitch
Make one increase
Make buttonholes
Bind off

All of them are basic stitches and techniques and as we go forward in the tutorial, I will show you how to make them.

As for the materials to knit this wool diaper cover in , all you need are a pair of number 5 straight knitting needles, a pair of wooden buttons and chucky yarn (number 6-7), I used a bit of the yarn leftover from making this knitted baby jacket, so with a ball of 50 gr. of yarn you will have more than enough.

For those of you who want to knit this project with another yarn and prefer to guide by measures in centimeters, or those of you who prefer to knit using a chart, I leave you this image of the pattern that you can expand by clicking on it if you need to see it larger or count stitches. The squares in horizontal are the stitches and vertically the rows, it will be easier to consider that each grid is 5×5.

At this point we should start with the decreases to go shaping the diaper cover. These decreases, instead of the beginning and end of the work will be done at four stitches of the edge so that the back of the frog is concave. We must make two decreases per row, one after knitting 6 stitches, binding off one stitch and another when we have 6 stitches left to finish the row, knitting two stitches together.

In this way, we will make a total of 16 rows of decreases, as you can see in the image, at this point, our knitted little diaper cover has already taken the shape of the back.

After kitting these 8 rows of 10 stiches each, we will begin to shape the front of the diaper cover with a series of increases. As we did before, we will also make increases to 4 stitches at the beginning and end of each row. In this other tutorial on how to make a baby cardigan you can learn to make these increases with more images.

To obtain these 20 stitches, we will have to knit 5 rows of increases. Cheer up that we have very little to finish!

There you have your knitted diaper cover ready to show off! As I said, this is a very fast, simple and suitable project for all knitting levels, also it is very easy to modify to other sizes following the instructions by centimeters instead of stitches. Now you know, if you like it ….you have no excuse to knit it!
